Inspection routines and intervals

How to establish a fixed routine

Start by assigning responsibility for the inspections and record the date, findings and any actions taken. Set intervals based on environmental conditions such as dust, chemicals, vibration and operating hours.

A simple checklist, ideally combined with photo documentation, makes it easier to follow developments over time.

What to look for

At every inspection you should pay attention to:

  • Leakage in the form of an oil film, drops or wet areas at hoses and fittings.
  • Wear or damage to the outer cover, including cracks and visible reinforcement.
  • Twist and overly sharp bends, which can significantly shorten service life.
  • Corrosion at couplings and metal reinforcements.
  • Thermal effects such as discolouration, hardness or brittleness.


Leakage – find the cause and stop the damage

If you discover a leak, always switch off the system and release the pressure before inspecting at close range.

First check the couplings for looseness and seal wear. Clean the area, wipe it dry and restart briefly to locate the seepage.

If the hose itself is damaged, it should be replaced – sealing alone is rarely a durable solution.


Contamination – keep the hose clean from production to installation

Cleanliness is crucial for both hoses and the components of the hydraulic system.

The hose should be blown through from both ends before installation and fitted with plugs or caps so that dirt cannot enter. Installation should take place in as clean an area as possible.

If there has been a breakdown or heavy contamination, flushing the system is recommended. Remember that dirt particularly damages valves, pumps and cylinders – not just the hose itself.



Temperature and operating conditions

The hose's temperature rating must always match the actual operating temperature of the oil.

A simple rule of thumb: if you can't hold on to the hose for about 5 seconds without discomfort, the temperature is probably too high compared with the specification.

Excess temperature leads to micro-cracks in the inner tube, loss of flexibility and a significantly shorter service life. In hot zones, heat shields, revised routing or hoses with a higher temperature rating may be necessary.

Correct installation and routing

To minimise the load on the hoses, you should:

  • Respect the minimum bend radius and avoid sharp kinks at the couplings.
  • Avoid twist during installation and ensure the correct angle on fittings.
  • Allow the hose sufficient slack for movement and vibration.
  • Keep clear of sharp edges and use protection where contact cannot be avoided.



Hose protection in tough environments

In environments with heavy wear, extra protection can extend the hose's service life considerably.

When should you replace the hose?

The hose should be replaced in case of:

  • Visible oil leakage.
  • Blisters or bulges.
  • Breaks in the outer cover with exposed reinforcement.

Shut down the system and fully relieve the pressure. Cover the area and use suitable protective equipment.

Mark the hose and preferably take photos of the routing and fittings before dismantling.

Keep the new hose plugged until installation, tighten couplings according to the manufacturer's data and test at low pressure first to check for leaks.
