Guide: How to choose the right hydraulic hose (STAMP)

Choose your hose using the STAMP method: Size, Temperature, Application, Media and Pressure, and always match hose, couplings and media according to the applicable EN/ISO standards. If in doubt, contact Hymatik for correct sizing and fast delivery.

STAMP

Size: Inside diameter (I.D.) and flow requirements.
Temperature: Ambient and media temperature.
Application: Bend radius, movement, vibration, installation.
Media: Type of oil/fluid and compatibility.
Pressure: Working pressure, peak pressure and safety factor.

Size

Find the correct dimension to avoid pressure loss, heat and unnecessary wear.

Measure the hose I.D. accurately (units of measurement: DN/-dash).
Size the hose to the desired flow velocity to minimise pressure loss and heat build-up.
Take length, fittings and any tight bends into account.

Typical mistakes

Too small an I.D. can lead to overheating and pressure loss.
An overly long hose or unnecessary bends can lead to turbulence and wear.

Temperature

The service life of the hose depends on temperature (heat and cold).

Two temperatures you need to know:

Ambient temperature: UV, ozone, chemicals and heat from nearby components.
Media temperature: Mineral oil, bio oil or water-based fluids.

Many hydraulic hoses are rated for approx. -40 °C to +100 °C (check the data sheet for exact limits). Extreme temperatures call for special hoses (e.g. high-temperature or cold-resistant covers).

Application

Always install the hose correctly and avoid premature failure. Factors to consider when choosing your hose:

Minimum bend radius (RB min): Comply with the manufacturer’s RB – never bend tighter.
Movement: Use a highly flexible hose for dynamic applications (e.g. EN 857 2SC).
Vibration: Consider ORFS couplings for sealing performance and vibration resistance.
Routing: Avoid torsion. Use 90° or 45° fittings where this improves flow and reduces stress.
Length compensation: Hoses can lengthen/shorten under pressure – allow room in the installation.
Abrasion: Choose a wear-resistant cover (e.g. SuperTough) or a protective sleeve where there is a risk of chafing.
Environment: Choose an ozone/UV-resistant cover for outdoor use; chemical exposure may require special materials.

Media

Remember to check which type of fluid your hydraulic system uses. Fluid compatibility is critical, so always check the media data.

Mineral oil (HL/HLP), bio-based oils (HEES/HETG), phosphate ester (HFD), water-based (HFA/HFB/HFC) and more.
Make sure that both the hose and the seals of the fittings (NBR/FKM/EPDM) are compatible.
Requirements for antistatic/conductive hoses may apply for certain media and ATEX environments.

Pressure

Know the working pressure and the peak pressure. Size the hose according to the highest actual pressure.

The working pressure of the hose assembly must be equal to or higher than the system’s maximum working pressure.
Peak pressure and pulses must be included in the calculation – consider a higher pressure class.
Follow the standard safety factor (typically 4:1 for hydraulics – confirm in the data sheet/standard).

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Which hydraulic hose should I use for high pressure in compact installations? Choose a 2SC/compact high-pressure class with a small bend radius and the correct working pressure. Check the data sheet for temperature and media.

Can I use bio oil in a standard hose? Only if the inner tube and seals are compatible with the bio oil. Check compatibility in the data sheet, otherwise choose a hose approved for bio oil.

How often should I inspect my hoses? Visually at every service inspection and always after pressure surges/overheating. Replace at the first sign of damage.

What does ISO 18752 mean? A global classification that groups hoses by pressure/temperature and application requirements to simplify selection across brands.
